Product of the Month ~ The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy

October's Product of the Month ~ The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy

Welcome to the Elemental Science’s Product of the Month for October! This month we are featuring the second book from our living book series, The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy!

What is the book about?

The Sassafras twins are zipping into homes around the world to deliver a living books education for anatomy like you have never seen before!

Product of the Month ~ The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy

The Sassafras series was born out of desire to make science fun and interesting for elementary students. Our hope was to create a series of living books that would teach the basic facts of science in the context of an adventure-style story, so that students would become excited about learning science!

In this volume, the science adventure continues for Blaine and Tracey Sassafras!  Your students will learn all about the human body as the twins zip around the globe. You will visit locations like an ancient tomb in Ethiopia, a garbage landfill in Texas and a bistro in Italy.  Blaine and Tracey meet a variety of local experts who help them along the way to learn about the different systems of the human body.  Read an excerpt from the novel.

The adventure style novel incorporates facts about the human body seamlessly into an action-packed story-line. The activity guide and logbook save you time by providing you with the tools to construct a full homeschool science curriculum!

Who is this book for?

The homeschooler interested in using living books for teaching science or the homeschooler with multiple children who wants to use only one science program will benefit from using this series. The Sassafras series novels are on a 5th grade reading level, so a middle school student can read it on his or her own, or younger students and the whole family can listen to the book as a read-aloud.

The activity guide has suggestions for older (middle-school) and younger (elementary) students. Plus, the logbook is very open-ended, so that you can tailor the program to the individual students’ needs. This way, you can have students ranging from K5 thru 6th grade using the same science program.

When you use the series as your main science curriculum, you will:

  1. Read a chapter in the adventure-style fictional book each week.
  2. Then, you will choose one or more activities from the activity guide to enhance what the students have learned from the novel.
  3. The students will record what they have learned in their own SCIDAT logbook.

The activity guide provides you with a buffet of options to explore the facts presented in the book.  You can choose to do a scientific demonstration, to study related vocabulary, to make a craft project or to read more about the topic in an encyclopedia.

The novel, activity and logbook work together to create a full homeschool science curriculum.

Where can I purchase the book?

  1. I love the first volume and can’t wait to get this one!

  2. Katie Kopff says:

My daughter is really enjoying the Zoology book. She is dyslexic and HATES writing, but this she will do happily — all because of the fun storyline involved. I am thrilled she will work independently on her logbook, trying hard to make it accurate. It’s our new favorite curriculum! I can’t wait to try to anatomy book!

  3. This series is put together really well – I love the logbook and my kids love the story. We own the zoology set and we’d love to have a copy of Anatomy (and all the others, once they come out!)

    • Gab,

Thanks so much for your kind words, so glad to read your kids are enjoying the series! We are already working hard on volume 3, and it is moving forward nicely. Best of luck in the contest :-)!

  4. Would love to try this with my kids

  5. We are JUST learning about Elemental Science (just signed up last night for your email subscription). We love the concept of a science with Living Books. Thank you for the opportunity to possibly win a copy.

  6. I am interested in checking out the Science Adventures series. We have heard great things about Sassafras science. My kids love for me to read aloud to them, so I think this would be a good fit

  7. I would love to win this for my son. I was planning on him working on it at the beginning of the year. Winning it would be great for the budget!

  8. We really learn well through stories in our home and we’ve been really wanting this series. Thank you for the review and giveaway!

  9. We are studying biology next year and would love a fun resource for all my kids to learn from.

  10. My 8 yr old loves the Sassafras Twins! I put post-it notes w/ each week’s assignments at the beginning of each chapter, and she often chooses to do her reading and log pages alone, and then we talk about it. She has read the chapter book several times on her own, but loves going back and rereading to complete her assignments. She followed your link and spent lots of time researching endangered species in our state, and even chose to write about it, something that rarely happens.

  11. I think my son would like this too.

  12. We’d love to win the second set! We’re LOVING the zoology study right now!

  13. My boys loved the sample chapters I read of the first book. If I were to win this 2nd volume, I’d definitely buy the first volume and use both. We’re studying biology this year, so they’d be perfect right now.

  14. We’d love to try the Sassafras science books- my son loves science, and we’re deep in the throes of chemistry right now! While he’d study nothing but that, he does need to cover some other topics, and this looks both fun and scientific (and we’re hoping you come out with the Botany one soon, he really wants to study it!)

    • Tiffany,

A boy after my own heart, chemistry is one of my favorites! Volume 3: Botany is currently in the works. I don’t have a definite release date yet, but next year is looking good. Best of luck on the contest :-)!

  15. I would love to win and use this curricula with my daughter. At the beginning of the year, I asked my daughter what she wanted to learn about and she told me the human body. Of course, I searched through my “teacher” resources and can’t find anything on the topic. This would be a great introductory course. She loves reading, writing, note booking, researching, and science. I am sure that the adventure story will immediately capture her attention. I am all about the living book approach! I love the fact that the children travel around the globe – allowing any parent to easily integrate a little geography or mapping into the lesson. This curricula looks like a “perfect” fit for us and it would be a blessing to win it. I appreciate that the activities are leveled so that we can pick and choose what works for our children. Some days I feel like she needs more of a challenge. Thank you for the chance to win your new program. I look forward to hearing about future curricula as well.

  16. We are looking forward to using the series next school year! What a great way to approach science!

  17. Nichole Middleton says:

I just discovered your products and they look wonderful! I’m excited to find out more!

  18. We’re getting ready to buy the first book, it’s been in my Amazon wishlist for way too long – of course we’d love to read the second book after that.

  19. Heidi Figueroa says:

Oh wow! My youngest son is an aspiring pediatrician to be (he’s just 10) would LOVE this book!!!! This looks awesome!!!

    • Heidi,

Your comment made me smile because in volume 2, Blaine suggests that he and Tracey pretend to be doctors for the day. I’m sure your son will enjoy the book and learn a few things about anatomy on the way. Best of luck on the contest :-)!

  20. I think my boys would love this. They love both science and adventure. 🙂

  21. Melissa Horton says:

I’m about to purchase Volume 1 to begin with my kids! I’d love to win Volume 2 to have ready for next semester!!

  22. We are LOVING your science programs(we use the Sassafras Zoology and the Logic Stage Biology for our older child). Both my kids love science now and your programs are top notch. Thank you for making such a wonderful curriculum!!!

  23. Holly Dibaba says:

My kids love Elemental Science! My youngest spends a lot of time reading anatomy books. I think they would really enjoy Sassafras 2.

  24. Looks great! Love your stuff – can’t wait to read these stories to our younger reading buddy friends.

  25. My children love reading about science!

  26. We have struggled so much with science this year. My girls were actually saying that they HATED science, which breaks my heart! I have been looking for this type of curriculum for science for so long. Even if I don’t win, I am super excited to have stumbled onto this curriculum!

    • Lana,

I’m sorry to hear that your girls have hated science! I trust that the Sassafras twins can help you turn that around. Best of luck on the contest!

  27. We’re using biology logic this year. These books have intrigued me though!

    • Beth,

I trust that you are enjoying Biology for the Logic Stage so far! We used the Sassafras twins as a fun way to review the concepts we were already learning in BLS. Best of luck on the contest :-)!
