3 Reasons to make time for science

Science is awesome! It is passion of mine which has easily spilled over to my kids.

I understand, though, that not everyone shares my passion for science. In fact, it is usually one of the subjects that is passed over in favor of the 3 R’s during the elementary years.

I’m here to say that science education in the elementary years is beneficial in so many ways! I know that it takes a bit of effort on the teacher’s part, but it is worth your time.

Today, I wanted to share with you my top three reasons to make time for science in your homeschool, especially during those early years.

3 Reason for teaching science

Reason #1 – SCIENCE IS JUST PLAIN FUN!

Let’s face it, experiments are fun!

Exploding a volcano, floating an egg, and playing with magnets are all exciting to watch and participate in. Investigation animals, plants, and rocks through nature study can make an afternoon disappear in a flash. Learning hands-on science is tons of fun!

The students who study science in the elementary years will see how much fun the subject can really be. These students will absorb tons of information and have a blast doing it!

As they grow older, you can build on that foundation during the middle school years to create an organized body of knowledge. So that by the time the student reaches the high school years, they will have a good grasp of science.

The students who have studied science early and often know how enjoyable science can be. For them, tackling the more difficult concepts seems less daunting thanks to the foundation they have built throughout the years. Besides, who doesn’t want to have fun in school?

Reason #2 – SCIENCE HELPS TO TRAIN THE BRAIN TO THINK LOGICALLY.

Research has shown that the study of science helps to develop the brain’s ability to think logically and critically.

By analyzing problems and determining how to follow the scientific method, students gain a foundation for logical thinking. This method is the formula all scientists learn to use when approaching a problem. The method follows the same steps each time:

You have a question;
You do some research about the topic;
You predict the answer to that question;
You do a scientific test to see what the answer could be;
You conclude what the answer is;
And you share your findings with others.

The scientific method is a logical and thorough process that is used over and over again to answer questions.

Using the scientific method early and often will train the students to approach questions and problems in a logical manner.

Reason #3 – SCIENCE PROVIDES AN AWARENESS OF THE WORLD.

Science is all around us.

It is in the metamorphosis of the butterfly, the changing colors of the leaves in fall, and the apple dropping off the tree.

The fact that you can walk upright and digest your food can all be explained through science.

When you teach science early and often, the students learn the why’s behind the things that take place every day. The subject will serve to deepen their appreciation of life and the world around them.
